Task Use the Gibbs 6 – stage model as a framework.

Use the attached document to help write your reflective practice

The 6 stages of the Gibb’s reflective cycle and set up of the reflective practice paper.

  1. Introduction – Clearly state what the essay will present to the reader

  2. Description – this describes the experience it is not critical thinking. Describe the experience and how it affected you.

  3. Feelings – How did you feel – prior, during and after the experience.

  4. Evaluation – What worked for you, what didn’t work for you how you resolved the situation? Peer Reviewed journals that can support you evaluation.

  5. Analysis – Consider the situation and reflect on the actions you took and how it impacted on you. Peer reviewed articles that can support your analysis.

  6. Conclusion – what should I have done differently

  7. Action Plan - Review the situation and how you felt how you could set goals that could help in the future.

How will this situation develop you to be a preceptor or mentor for others in the clinical area?

Peer review articles on setting goals as a new graduate.

  1. Conclusion of Essay – bring all the reflection together and talk about your plan as a new graduate.

Assessment criteria: 

  • Follows ALL presentation guidelines accurately

       -  Excellent attention to correct spelling, grammar punctuation and    syntax.

  • Has an effective introduction (topic sentences, statement of intent); utilises the Gibbs 6-stage model to provide a smooth progression of ideas in the body of the paper by using transitional devices (headings, linking sentences). Points are well developed and directly related to the task. Conclusion effectively summarises the main points in the paper (no new data).

  • Demonstrates thorough understanding of reflection and reflective practice. Each stage of the Gibbs model explained and cited. Nursing philosophy clearly stated; linkage of philosophy to incident and action plan clearly evident. Demonstrates excellence in reflecting on own knowledge/ skills/ attitude.

  • A minimum of five peer reviewed journals are used to build and support the discussion; the use of direct quotes is minimal (≤ 3); APA guidelines are used to format in-text referencing giving page numbers for all cited references and the end-of-text reference list (≤ 3 errors). All in text references have page numbers for paraphrasing and cited references (page 5 APA guide)
